Descendants of James Taylor of England

Generation #4

Mary (1Research) Taylor of Orange Co VA

Mary Taylor was born 1745 in Orange Co VA. And in about 1763 in Orange Co VA, Mary was wed to Abraham Crosthwait b. 1725 in Philadelphia PA.

Sometime after 5/1772, the family  to Washington Co VA where Abraham ran an Ordinary on the Wilderness Road at the Middle Fork of the Holston River, between Marion and Chillhowie, VA.

In about 1790, the family migrated to Greene Co NC (now TN). Did Abraham migrate in the path of son-in-law John Slaughter?

Abraham died 1801 in Greene Co TN. And, Mary died sometime thereafter.

The following was prepared by Frank S. and Carol D. Crosswhite (both PhD's):

Abraham married Mary Taylor, daughter of George Taylor, the Clerk of Court of Orange County. By virtue of this marriage, the Mary Crosthwait/Croswright who married William Phillips (together with her brother George Crosswhite, patriarch of all Johnson County (TN) Crosswhites) had the same great grandfather as President James Madison and President Zachary Taylor. This common ancestor was James Taylor, one of Governor Spotswood's "Knights of the Golden Horseshoe" who first explored the Shenandoah Valley.

Thomas Chew, sheriff and judge of Orange County, was married to Mary's aunt so when Abraham and Mary visited the Chews they went to see Uncle Tom and Aunt Martha. Thomas Chew was also second
cousin to Abraham's mother Hannah
. After settling near Chilhowie, Abraham and Mary eventually sold everything in Orange County at a grand auction presided over by Abraham's uncle, a Zachary Taylor of a previous generation to that of the President.

This James TAYLOR II was the son of James TAYLOR, immigrant from Carlisle, England, to Virginia, by his first marriage to Frances WALKER. James II married Martha THOMPSON and had many descendants which included Presidents MADISON and TAYLOR. Their daughters, Martha, married Thomas CHEW, and daughter, Tabitha, married Thomas WILD. Their son, George, was the Col. George TAYLOR who married Rachel GIBSON and had many sons who fought in the Rev War. Their son, Zachary, was the grandfather of President TAYLOR. Daughter, Frances, married Ambrose MADISON and was grandmother to President James MADISON. It appears your Mary TAYLOR is descended from George and Rachel. If so, this would be the first female identified in their family. The TAYLOR family also was connected to the WINSTON family of Virginia and the daughter of Patrick Henry (Dorothea HENRY) married a WINSTON and his father married Patrick Henry's widow. The daughter was living in Limestone Co., Ala., in 1850 census with her daughter who had married a CRENSHAW. Is this not a small world? I have been working on this family since Aug 1991 and the project is almost overwhelming.
