Christian (0Research) Stout of Licking Co OH

Christian Stout was born 6/10/1776 in Northampton Co PA. On 12/10/1797 in Northampton Co PA, Christian wed Mary Magdalene Hess b. 3/23/1780 in Northampton Co PA. From the 1880 Licking Co OH Census, we learn that both of daughter Susan Stout's parents were born in Pennsylvania.

In 4/1805 Christian and family migrated west on Owens Road as part of the larger Hess family to Luzerne County where many of the children were born. Christian lived in Harveyville, and while in Luzerne County, Christian was active in politics and was appointed constable.

Research Note: The Stouts migrated as part of the extended Hess family from Northampton to the border of Northumberland and Luzerne counties north of the Susquehanna River. Mary Magdalene's father, Jeremiah Hess, settled in the Wapwallopen region of Luzerne county, east and south of the Susquehanna River from his older brother, Johan William Hess, who settled in about 1792 in at Fishing Creek. Of note, Johan William was truly a pioneer to the lands west of the Susquehanna. By the time Jeremiah Hess and Christian Stout migrated, the conditions would have been much easier.

Christian and family migrated in 1832 along with Mary Magdalene's sister, Margaret Hess Berger, to Licking Co OH, where the family settled:

Henry Benner, John Bevard, and perhaps others came to Newton in 1810; and these were followed in succession by Major John Huston, William Spencer (brother of General John), Colonel John Waggoner, Peter Pence, David Marple and others, who were principally Virginians and Pennsylvanians. Zachariah Albaugh, the veteran centenarian revolutionary hero; John Keim, Christian Stout, Bazaleel Moreland, Edward Thomas and others were settlers of a later date. These were also Virginians and Pennsylvanians.

With this late date of migration, the route would have been fairly easy. Starting in central Pennsylvania, the family would have traveled south and west down to the intersection with the the Germantown Pike and the ferry at Harrisburg, crossing the river then west on Forbes Road toward Pittsburg then down Zane's Trace to central Ohio.

In 1845 Mary Magdalene died. In the 1850 Licking Co OH Census we find Christian and a Martha Stout b. 1796 in Pennsylvania living in close proximity to the Evans and Wheeler families. In 1860 we find Christian listed on the same page as grandson Nathan Smith. Christian died in 1865 in Licking Co OH.
