Henry (1John) Taverner of England

Henry Taverner was a famous ship's captain who explored Virginia, the Carolinas, Florida, and the Caribbean. Was he a son of the Taverner family who invested in Jamestown and settled in Virginia? Probably.

From a 1634 record, we learn that Henry was born in 1601 or 1602 and was from All Hallows, Barking, London, England. And, Henry married an unknown spouse who reportedly immigrated to Virginia.

Henry is first documented in 1732 as an early English explorer of the Carolinas coast, sailing on the Mayflower. Henry had to find a smaller ship to navigate the coastal waters and left the Mayflower for the Thomas.

Henry continued to sail from Britain to America and the Caribbean for the next decade and is last documented arriving on the River Clyde in Scotland in 1642.

Reportedly, Henry patented land and shipped his wife to Virginia. However, no record is found to date. Henry is believed to have died in about 1666 in Barbados

Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers, p. 683:
Between Christmas 1634 and Christmas 1635 Hilary Taverner, Master of the Thomas, brought 58 passengers to Virginia.
